An independent guide to careful research
Osintian is a free, plain-English guide to open-source intelligence: the skills, the searches and the self-checks, taught with the lawful purpose first.
The gap between link lists and expensive courses
Most of what you find about OSINT is either a huge directory of tools with no explanation, a vendor selling software, or an advanced course for professionals. Very little starts at the beginning, in plain words, and very little says clearly where the line is.
Osintian fills that gap: one skill per page, the steps a careful researcher follows, how to record what you found, and a box on every method page asking “Is this lawful and ethical?”

Beginners, working researchers, and anyone protecting themselves
- Beginners and career changers who have heard the word OSINT and want to know what it is and how to start.
- Working researchers: journalists, fact-checkers, fraud and compliance analysts, due-diligence researchers and paralegals who want a clear, sourced reference.
- Anyone protecting themselves: checking a suspicious message or website, or seeing what is out there about them and taking it down.
Calm, sourced and dated
Guides are written like a calm senior analyst teaching a sharp newcomer: short sentences, exact steps on public sources, then how you know the answer is true. Every claim names its source, and every tool mention carries the date we last looked at it.
The method behind every page is on the method page, and the rules are on ethics and rules. Images on this site are AI-generated stills made for Osintian; each is listed on the image credits page.
Plainly, what Osintian is not
- Not a people-search or background-check service. We do not look people up for readers and do not sell reports.
- Not a consumer reporting agency. Nothing here may be used for decisions about credit, jobs, housing, insurance or tenancy.
- Not a private investigator, a law firm or a law-enforcement body. Nothing here is legal advice.
- Not a training provider. We sell no courses and offer no certificates.
- Not affiliated with any OSINT organisation, publisher or tool we mention.
